Gunnerside is a quiet village lying between Reeth and Keld in this predominantly sheep-farming area of Swaledale, the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales. The northern Yorkshire Dales lie in the centre of the country from the Pennine range of hills across towards the North Yorkshire Moors.
Gunnerside has an excellent tea room with evening bistro (The Ghyll Foot Tea Room and Restaurant) and a good pub, the Kings Head (http://kingsheadgunnerside.co.uk/) and is a wonderful starting point for local walking and cycling, including off-road cycling. Travel along the dale in either direction will bring you to Reeth (7 miles east) or Muker (4 miles west) with good places to see, shop and eat. Hawes is towards the west end of Wensleydale, the next dale south and lying parallel to Swaledale, and is a great place to visit including many attractions suitable for children. Leyburn is the main town towards the eastern end of Wensleydale and offers the most comprehensive local shopping apart from Richmond. Richmond is at the eastern end of Swaledale and is the largest town in the area, with excellent shopping and many historical and other attractions for all ages.
Gunnerside is served by a regular 16-seater bus service from Richmond (http://www.littlewhitebus.co.uk/timetables.php); Richmond has a frequent bus service from Darlington providing links to the national rail network.
